During this time, I've witnessed not only the evolution of Google's algorithm, but also, and perhaps more importantly, the transformation of the online marketing industry itself. Both of these developments have driven me to adapt, to continuously train and stay up-to-date, and to keep the spark of passion alive for a profession that continues to excite me.

Increasingly, in the web positioning sector, there is an abundance of (supposed) professionals who promise immediate results and claim to have the magic recipe for the success of any project (often at suspiciously cheap prices or, conversely, outrageously expensive ones).

However, those of us who manage digital acquisition channels at a strategic level know that sustainable growth is not the result of chance, but of a rigorous methodology, data-driven decisions, and a deep understanding of the business.

The success story I'm sharing today perfectly reflects this philosophy. The initial objective seemed clear: to break through a glass ceiling that was hindering the brand's visibility in organic search results.

Thirty months later, reality has surpassed all initial expectations. Applying a comprehensive strategy that began with the foundations of technical and semantic SEO, and which today has expanded to include advanced analytics, paid media, and internationalization, I have managed to increase the website's organic traffic by 50 times..

Far from stabilizing, the domain is currently experiencing its most technically robust phase, achieving such clean visibility that it not only dominates Google's search results pages, but has also become a recurring reference source for the main AI-based conversational response engines (LLMs).

Below, I break down step by step the implementation phases that made this exponential growth possible, of which I am especially proud.

The importance of diagnosis and conducting an initial audit

When a digital project is completely stalled, the most common mistake is to reactively start writing content or buying links immediately. However, I was clear that before charting any course, it was essential to understand the root causes of the problem. Therefore, the first thing I told the client was that at that stage of the project, the most important thing was... conduct an in-depth audit divided into five strategic pillars: technical SEO, architecture and semantic SEO, keyword research and content planning, competitor research and mapping, analysis of the domain's link profile vs. its competition.

It is very common for a customer to be reluctant to conduct a prior audit, mainly for two reasons.

The first is the price. A thorough audit requires many hours of work to extract data from various sources, perform the analysis (of data, content, competition, SERP, etc.), to define the strategic approach and the actions necessary to correct problems detected, and finally to write and summarize all the information in a report.

The second reason why a client might be reluctant to have an audit done is simply the sense of urgency. We live in a world where we want everything now, and paying for a service only to see that no changes are being made to the site or that no content is being published feels like throwing money away.

For some clients, this phase is difficult to understand, and for those who work in consulting, it can be frustrating to see a client disappear for this reason (although a "hybrid solution" is often sought, phasing the audit to apply changes as certain things are audited, or including it within the fee so that it does not result in a significant initial outlay).

Luckily (for me and the client), in this case I found a very reasonable, curious interlocutor who was interested in doing things right, so I was able to dedicate the first month entirely to studying the patient and looking for a cure.

I mentioned five fundamental pillars earlier. Below, I'll elaborate on them with a bit more context, so you can see why they were so important.

A. Technical SEO Audit

The first step was to ensure the website's foundation was ready for massive crawling. I meticulously analyzed the Google indexing status, eliminating duplicate URLs, redirect loops, and "technical noise" that was unnecessarily consuming the crawl budget. I also optimized performance metrics (Core Web Vitals), guaranteeing optimal loading speed for both users and search engine bots. Although the site didn't have many landing pages at the time, it did have an e-commerce section with a large number of products. Frequent product additions and removals, a lack of optimization, and several other issues had resulted in a legacy of 404 errors, large images, and a general lack of instructions for crawlers, both in the source code and through indexing and crawling files (robots.txt, XML sitemap).

B. Architecture and Semantic SEO

A website can have a lot of authority, but if its structure isn't clear and well-defined, it will end up confusing the algorithm and likely won't rank its main services. I restructured the site's hierarchy by implementing structured data that provides unambiguous semantic context for crawlers. In addition, I optimized the content of transactional landing pages and reorganized the internal linking to ensure an efficient flow of link juice to the highest-converting sections of the business.

C. Keyword research and planning

I've seen many websites that base their content on intuition and what they believe to be the most searched or most suitable keywords for each page. While the direct business experience a client can provide is undoubtedly valuable, I combined that information with data, obtained after conducting thorough market research. This allowed me to identify not only the terms with the highest direct search volume but also the most qualified search intents. From this semantic map, I designed a balanced editorial calendar, segmenting which keywords would be targeted through sales service pages and which required specific supporting content.

Ranking your business's most valuable transactional pages isn't achieved solely by optimizing their text. For Google and other search engines, a domain is relevant when it demonstrates a complete mastery of a subject.

Therefore, I implemented an architecture based on highly specialized supporting content. The editorial calendar I designed for the blog focused on writing high-quality articles with a lot of unique data (specific to the business), targeting informational search intent and long-tail keywords.

Each of these articles had to share a dual technical purpose: on the one hand, to increase subject authority(topic relevance) of the domain in relation to the algorithm, demonstrating that the website offers the most complete answer in the sector; and on the other hand, optimize the flow of link juice, structuring a controlled internal linking that naturally directs users and crawlers from the blog's informative content to the service pages.

D. Competitive Mapping

To understand how to gain visibility, the first crucial step was to accurately position the client within the market relative to their direct competitors. I analyzed the strengths and weaknesses of the most prominent domains in the sector locally, identifying content gaps and overlooked technical opportunities that my client could capitalize on more effectively.

E. Link profile analysis (off-page SEO)

Finally, I audited the domain's strength in terms of its external authority. I evaluated the quality, origin, and naturalness of the links pointing to the website compared to the competition. This assessment was crucial in identifying the need for a digital PR strategy (which we could define as an evolution of traditional link building) aimed at gaining the trust of Google and other search engines (including LLMs), after improving the domain's authority.

This gain in external authority acted as the perfect catalyst. By receiving links from high-trust environments, Google's algorithm began crawling the site more frequently, accelerating the indexing of newly created pages and definitively solidifying the upward trend in global rankings.

This initial assessment allowed us to identify the problems and uncover a clear truth: the project had enormous potential, but lacked a clean data infrastructure and a unified strategy. With the assessment complete, it was much easier to move forward, supported by the data and with the confidence of having charted a solid strategic course that, in time, would allow us to reap the rewards of our efforts.

SEO in the era of LLMs (GEO)

I've left this section separate because, while GEO or LLM optimization should be part of an organic optimization strategy, I believe that those who have always followed good SEO practices will almost inevitably already be ranking in conversational search engines and Google's AI Overview results.

It would be pointless to deny that the digital procurement landscape is undergoing a historic transformation since the arrival of the LLMs with the launch of ChatGPT in November 2022.

In 2026, limiting an organic optimization strategy to appearing exclusively on Google's traditional search results page is an incomplete view. Today, users seek direct answers through Large Language Models (LLMs) and conversational assistants like ChatGPT, Gemini, Claude, or Google's AI mode.

But be aware: all of this has a long history, well before AI appeared in our lives. It was seven years ago, in 2019, that I wrote about searches without interactions (following the publication of a study that revealed that, for the first time, More than half of the searches performed on Google.com did not produce any interaction. with none of the results, that is, they didn't produce a single click).

In any case, it is in this scenario that the true value of the semantic and structural strategy that I applied to the project has become evident.

By rigorously employing structured data tagging, cleaning up the information architecture, and enriching the blog's content with subject-matter authority based on original and unique data (not a simple copy-paste of information already available online), the website was not only more understandable to traditional crawlers, but also became a perfect data source for artificial intelligence algorithms.

The fruits of this approach, technically known as GEO (Generative Engine OptimizationThese results have quickly followed. Currently, the domain has established itself as a recurring source that appears in LLM and AI Overview responses. When a user asks an AI model about options related to the services offered by my client (or even about some topics covered in blog articles), the brand is organically cited as one of the leading solutions in the local market.

Appearing in AI search engines not only opens up a completely new acquisition channel, but also brings immeasurable brand value and trust. A user referred by an LLM is already at a much later stage of the sales funnel, resulting in a significantly higher conversion rate.

A data ecosystem for analysis and optimization

The exponential growth in visits lacks real value if it is not accompanied by absolute control over user behavior and business profitability. I believe that Web analytics is not a passive process not only to audit the past, but also an indispensable tool for defining the actions to be taken in the future.

Therefore, in parallel with the implementation of the SEO strategy, within the initial framework of the project, I completely restructured the measurement infrastructure to eradicate "data blindness" and have a clear and value-adding measurement system.

A. Migration to Google Tag Manager

The first technical step involved a complete migration of all website measurement systems to a centralized container in Google Tag Manager. This allowed us to clean up the website's code and deploy a pre-measured, advanced analytical event architecture.

They stopped measuring only generic page views and started tracking each critical interaction within the conversion funnel in a granular way:

Completed contact forms

Clicks on key service booking buttons

Clicks on outgoing links that initiated support conversations via WhatsApp

Telephone call events

Event: Clicks on email from the web

All this information was optimally integrated into Google Analytics 4 (GA4), ensuring that each lead was correctly attributed to its source channel under current privacy regulations.

B. Dashboards in Data Studio

To transform this massive volume of technical metrics into agile management decisions, I designed a fully customized and automated dashboard in Data Studio Overview (formerly known as Looker Studio). Thanks to this visual and easy-to-understand report, business management could begin monitoring, in real time and at a glance, customer acquisition cost, conversion rate, and the true return on investment, along with many other valuable metrics.

C. Activation of accelerators

Having a reliable 100% database gave me the green light to safely activate and optimize other acquisition channels that acted as accelerators of organic traffic:

Google Ads: I designed four campaigns aligned with the SEO strategy. By cross-referencing Search Console and analytics data, I was able to fine-tune the bidding significantly, focusing almost exclusively on high-transaction-return terms and avoiding (as much as possible) wasting budget on overly generic keywords or those with insufficient profit margins.

Company profile (Google My Business): Since it was a specialized brick-and-mortar business operating in Barcelona, I optimized its local SEO to gain visibility in geo-targeted searches. The combination of reviews, technical categorization, and geo-specific content significantly increased direct calls and traffic from the business profile.

The creation of this cross-data ecosystem demonstrated that technical SEO and paid media reach their maximum performance when they feed off each other with clean, professional analytics.

Localized with data-driven care

When a digital project reaches technical and semantic maturity in its native market, the next natural step is expansion. Far from resting on my laurels, the phase I'm currently working on with this client is focused on opening the business to new language markets through a strictly data-driven strategy.

Barcelona is one of the European capitals with the highest density of international professionals and foreign residents (the so-called "expats," among whom I also count myself, since I have lived in Barcelona since 2005). Analyzing both Google Search Console reports and conducting keyword research for the main business terms, I detected a significant volume of searches in English originating from the Barcelona metropolitan area.

Services such as DJ booth rentals, studio recording sessions, or specialized courses had a real latent demand from an Anglo-Saxon audience that was not being optimally served by local competition.

To ensure a successful international expansion, I rejected from the outset the idea of using machine translation or AI-based translation (which is a very useful tool, but not suitable for everything and cannot always replace human expertise). Specialized services and training require connecting with the culture and language of the user, just as brand tone and precise search intent cannot be delegated to literal translation software.

For this reason I have decided to carry out a meticulous manual localization process, based on a prior study of the keywords in English and on the adaptation (not literal translation) of the content.

Conducting keyword research is a fundamental step that allows you to analyze exactly how the international audience living in Barcelona and the surrounding area searches, in order to adapt URLs, titles, and headings to their actual search behavior.

On the other hand, rewriting and adapting the text of the landing pages ensures that the message resonates with the expectations, style, and specific needs of the English-speaking audience.

Once the bilingual structure in Spanish and English is established, the next phase of the international roadmap will focus on localizing the web ecosystem into Catalan. Although search volumes in this language for this specific sector are not as high, from a strategic point of view I consider it a fundamental step to attract local traffic and consolidate the brand with a strong presence and absolute leadership in its territory of origin (furthermore, the level of competition for keywords in Catalan is usually lower than in Spanish).

What lesson can be learned from this success story?

Increasing a project's organic traffic by 50 in 30 months yields valuable lessons that extend far beyond the technical factors of Google ranking. If I had to summarize the success of this case in three lessons, they would be the following:

SEO is not an isolated channel: The exponential growth of this project didn't come out of nowhere. It worked because SEO was connected to a robust analytics infrastructure, accelerated in a coordinated manner with paid campaigns, and optimized with local SEO and new forms of search based on artificial intelligence (GEO) in mind.

Patience and consistent execution: The initial phases of technical auditing and semantic cleanup laid the essential foundation. Real takeoff required consistent development of specialized supporting content and a firm commitment to building long-term authority through digital PR.

Decisions guided by real return: Eliminating vanity metrics and focusing on conversion (calls, forms, direct messages, emails) allowed us to optimize resources and concentrate on what attracts potential customers. This same analytical mindset is what now allows us to safely expand the business into the international market and the Catalan market.

I am convinced that this case demonstrates that when a company combines great service with a clear acquisition strategy and an integrated digital ecosystem, achieving very good results is not only possible, but almost inevitable.

If you've read this far, I'd now like to ask if you think your business is already taking full advantage of the online environment, or if, on the contrary, you feel that your website has reached a limit it can't overcome, or perhaps that you're investing resources in marketing without a clear control of conversion data.

If you fall into the second category, you most likely need a senior profile to lead and coordinate your acquisition channel strategy profitably. Tell me about your project, I would love to be your digital partner and help you gain more visibility, customers, and sales.

I've been working in digital marketing, and especially SEO, for almost 20 years. Increasingly, the SEO sector is overflowing with (so-called) professionals who promise immediate results and claim to have the magic formula for the success of any project (often at suspiciously low prices or, conversely, outrageously high ones). However, those of us who manage digital acquisition channels strategically know that sustainable growth isn't a matter of chance, but rather the result of a rigorous methodology, data-driven decisions, and a deep understanding of the business. The success story I'm sharing today perfectly reflects this philosophy. This is a Barcelona-based project focused on a highly competitive local sector (specialized services for venue and sound and lighting equipment rental, music production, and training), which I began working on in September 2023. The initial objective seemed clear: to break through a glass ceiling that was holding back the brand's visibility in organic search results. Thirty months later, reality has exceeded all initial expectations. Far from stabilizing, the domain is currently experiencing its strongest technical performance, achieving such clear visibility that it not only dominates Google's search results pages but has also become a recurring reference source for leading AI-powered conversational search engines (LLMs). Below, I break down step by step the implementation phases that made this exponential growth possible, of which I am especially proud. The Importance of Diagnosis and Conducting an Initial Audit When a digital project is completely stalled, the most common mistake is to start reactively writing content or buying links immediately. However, I was clear that before charting any course, it was essential to understand the root causes of the problem. Therefore, the first thing I told the client was that at that stage of the project, the most important thing was to conduct a thorough audit divided into five strategic pillars: technical SEO, architecture and semantic SEO, keyword research and content planning, competitor analysis and mapping, and analysis of the domain's link profile versus its competitors. The second reason why a client might be reluctant to have an audit done is simply a sense of urgency. We live in a world where we want everything now, and paying for a service only to see that no changes are being made to the site or that no content is being published feels like throwing money away. Some clients find this phase difficult to understand, and for consultants, it can be frustrating to see a client disappear for this reason (although a "hybrid solution" is often sought, such as phasing the audit to implement changes as certain aspects are audited, or including it within the fee to avoid a significant initial outlay). Fortunately (for both myself and the client), in this case I encountered a very reasonable, inquisitive, and dedicated partner, so I was able to dedicate the first month entirely to studying the patient and finding a solution. I mentioned five fundamental pillars earlier. Below, I'll detail them with a bit more context to show why they were so important. A. Technical SEO Audit The first step was to ensure the website's foundation was ready for massive crawling. I meticulously analyzed the indexing status on Google, eliminating duplicate URLs, redirect loops, and "technical noise" that was unnecessarily consuming the crawl budget.
